Caleb Alden Crull

Caleb Alden Crull was born on July 16, 1959 in San Diego, CA to Betty Jo and Alden Crull. He was born the third of five children. As a child Caleb was cheerful and sweet and like most boys, always up to mischief. He acquired a nickname from his older brother Mark, --Pearhead', which stuck with him through the years. After receiving his GED, Caleb went into the grocery business for a while, but later found that it was the car business that he loved. He was a longstanding businessman in the car sales industry. In October of 2002 Caleb's life took a life altering turn. He became very ill and was hospitalized in West Virginia. He was blind for three days and had a double stroke that affected his ocular nerves. He eventually received his center vision back but permanently lost his peripheral vision. Caleb realized that his life would never be the same, but through his faith in God and the support of his family he began a new journey that brought him closer to his family than ever before. Caleb never complained about his situation and took a proactive role in bettering his life, health and community. While volunteering at a center in West Central Spokane he met the love of his life, Lori. He was amazed by this beautiful woman who had a kind nature and caring heart for underprivileged people of Spokane. Together they joined forces and were married in 2005. Their ministry was powerful in the form of the opening of Little Lambs Child Care. Not only did they provide childcare but they gave out hundreds of backpacks, free haircuts and games with prizes galore. Caleb and Lori began to attend All Nations Christian Church and quickly sensed that it was a place of sincere worship and service to our Lord. Pastor Schott gravitated towards Caleb and they became fast friends. Caleb's personality was beyond compare; he was gregarious, funny and larger than life. Caleb entered into rest peacefully at home on March 29, 2011. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Caleb is survived by his loving wife Lori; children Melissa, Gideon, Samantha, Randy; grandson Elijah; sisters Karen Miller, Julie (Dan) Powell; brother Mark Neal; sister-in-law Leslie (Jerry) Radebaugh; brother-in-law Mark (Laura) Presting, nephews Travis, Austin, Jordan, Ernie and Matthew; nieces Crystal, Katrina and Mattie; and his faithful companion his dog Sydney. A celebration of Caleb's life will be held on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 11:00am at All Nations Christian Center, 1827 East Pacific Avenue Spokane, WA 99202. Donations may be made to the Lilac Blind Foundation, 1212 North Howard Street, Spokane, WA 99201.

Chuck Hanke

Chuck HANKE Charles Josef Hanke passed away on March 6, 2011. Born a Tlingit/German/Irishman in Bellingham, WA on November 19, 1939 to Fred and Sophie Hanke, Chuck developed a love of nature and cars at a young age. As a pre-teen, he trekked off alone along the coastline below Chuckanut Drive to spend his weekends camping and fishing. At 12, Chuck owned his first car; the first of well over 1000 that he owned in his lifetime. His destiny as a Longshoreman was determined early when, at age 9, he gave himself a tattoo: an anchor on his forearm which was enormous on his child-sized body but tiny on his 6'6' adult frame. Chuck lived a unique life, especially as a parent. In 1969, he married Valerie Curran and lovingly acquired her 3 children Erin, Tasha and Gregg. Together they had Garth. After his 1st marriage ended in divorce, Chuck married ReeAnne Halonen in 1985 and from her gained yet 3 more children: Vince, Mance and Angela. Together, they created a welcoming, fun home (warmly known as 73rd & Chaos) which was a safehaven for many, full of good music (especially Blues), good food and humor. Chuck regaled us with hilarious stories of his adventurous life, especially working on the waterfront; bringing all who were interested down to the piers to enjoy the view as he tied up freighters. Chuck approached life with a creative eye and the motto 'Normal? Any jerk can be normal!' He generously shared his love and exceptional sense of humor, once joking at work 'I left a legacy that will last a lunchtime.' Predeceased by his parents, wife ReeAnne, brother Fred Hanke, and granddaughters Vanessa Downing and Samantha Sterkel-Webb. Survived by his 7 kids and their children, his sisters Millie, Karla and Rose and a brother Jack, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A celebratory memorial will be held on April 10 at 1:00pm at Daybreak Star: 3801 West Government Way, Seattle 98199. Special thanks to the ILWU Local 19 and to the excellent staff at Foss Home.

At age seven, the family moved to a farm in Rittman OH where Frances attended primary grades in a one-room schoolhouse and proudly graduated third in her 1933 class of Rittman High School. In the midst of the Great Depression, Frances attended business school and found employment as a bookkeeper with the Hoover Company for many years., It was 1942, while on a dusty train headed to New Jersey, that she met her future husband Harlow Willey. By the mere gesture of providing a clean seat on the train, he caught her eye and throughout World War II they kept in contact while Harlow was stationed overseas. Upon his return, they wed in 1945 at a private ceremony held in Grants Pass OR. Employment after the war took them to many small towns in Eastern Washington and Oregon. Yearning for the Pacific Northwest, they moved to Mount Vernon in 1951. Here they owned the iconic Willey TV and Appliance found on Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon for over twenty years. Their store, next to Bert Robinson's, combined TV sales with Hammond Music at one point. They also owned a TV antenna rental business in the days before cable. "A Scots Farewell" (unknown author) When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no tears in a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little but not for long And not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take And each must go alone. It's all part of the master plan A step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, Go to the friend we know And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me.... but let me go.

Hazel Ione Ahl

Was born on February 17, 1914 in Broken Bow, Nebraska, and passed away on March 28, 2011 in Medical Lake, Washington. Hazel was the youngest of eleven children, the daughter of J.B. Walker and Elizabeth Jerome. She grew up in Broken Bow and met and married the love of her life, Herbert Ahl, in 1931. Their son, Chuck, was born in 1932, and the young family set out from Nebraska to make their way in the world as the Great Depression and the ravages of the Dust Bowl choked opportunities in the Midwest. They moved to the Pacific Northwest, settling in Twin Falls, ID, and the Tri-Cities area of Washington. Herb worked as a brick mason on projects for the United States government, including the Bonneville Dam and eventually the family made their way to Spokane and both Herb and Hazel found jobs working at the Kaiser rolling mill during World War II. Their youngest son, Ron, was born in Spokane in 1945 and the family made their home here in the proceeding years., After Herb retired in 1978, Herb and Hazel purchased a motor home and traveled back to Nebraska visiting family and old friends. Herb passed away too soon in 1989 and Hazel moved to the West Plains to live next to her son, Ron, and his young family., Hazel enjoyed watching her three grandsons grow up. She attended every school concert and sport event and marked their progress by posting every handmade craft and grade report and eagerly invited every visitor to note the accomplishments of her "boys". She also enjoyed visits from granddaughter Shari and great-grandchildren, Angie and Krista O'Neel., In her later years, Hazel enjoyed the company of a great friend, Ron Mc Pheron. They spent many hours attending functions for the Eagles, traveling to various areas in the Northwest and contributing their organizing efforts to conventions and committees. They particularly enjoyed visiting old friends and meeting new ones in the Tri-Cities area., Hazel had an amazingly positive attitude throughout her life. She was always ready and willing to put on her coat and hop in the car, happy to be having a new adventure. She enjoyed meeting new people and warmly considered everyone a friend. She endured difficult times with optimism and determination, ready to pitch in and help with whatever she could contribute. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a wonderfully generous friend. Hazel endured the sorrow and joys of life and taught everyone how to live fully and enjoy the simple pleasures of a home-cooked meal and the company of friends., Hazel is survived by her son Ron (Joan) and grandsons Herb, Alexander, and Gabriel Ahl; granddaughter Shari O'Neel and great granddaughter Krista O'Neel; grandson Gary Ahl, his wife Elaine, their children and grandchildren, step-grandchildren Richard Bryant and Terri Bryant, and numerous nephews and nieces., Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Herb, sons Harold and Charles, granddaughter Angie O'Neel, and her special friend Ron. She will be greatly missed., A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Pines Cemetery, 1402 S. Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA., In lieu of flowers, and in the spirit of Hazel's attitude toward helping those down on their luck and less fortunate than herself, the family suggests donations in her name to the House of Charity, P.O. Box 2253, Spokane, WA 99210-2253.

Martin "mardo" Schueman

Martin "Mardo" K. Schueman was born in Wooddale, IL in 1949 to Vivian and Herbert Schueman. He spent the majority of his wonder years growing up in Florida and fondly reminisced about the warm weather, long-board surfing, and childhood friends from the Sunshine State. In his teen years he hitch-hiked across the country, exploring the U.S and attending rock concerts. In 1969 he met his future wife, Julie and the two would be intertwined for forty-two years. Mardo and Julie traveled to Arizona and Mexico throughout the first decade of their relationship. Their families called them gypsies, wondering when they would settle down. After going to Alaska as a crew member on board a commercial fishing vessel, Mardo fell in love with the ocean. He fished in the San Juan Islands during the industry's glory years. During this time, he and Julie lived on the wild beach of Semiahmoo before it was developed and until the birth of their daughter in 1982. M ardo and Julie settled on a salty piece of land in Custer, WA where they built their home together. As the house went up, Mardo worked along side friends, adding personal touches. He is remembered as someone who, like the things he built, was strong and sturdy. His knack for building translated from his professional work in oil refineries as a Senior Craft Insulator, a trade he practiced for over thirty years in various refineries across the west coast. The home he built for his family is where he wanted to spend his golden years, and he passed peacefully there, in his sleep on Friday, March 25, 2011. Mardo is lovingly survived by his wife and daughter, Julie and Kassondra Schueman; his sisters, Donna Powell and Leandra Matson; and his brother Douglas Benton; along with their children.
